I love this recent blog post from www.garancedore.fr about “What is Elegance?” and thought it was worth a repost!

My 2010 Kate Spade calendar is hanging on my kitchen wall, and I’ve used the last week of vacation to get things in order for the new year.  My home and yard are tidy, my wardrobe and shoes are mended and polished (and a few new essentials have been added!), and my car is currently in the shop for maintenance.  I love the feeling of starting the new year on top of things.

I have lots of goals for 2010 including reading more books, sewing more garments,  seeing new places, running regularly, improving my posture, and having more fun.  I also want to cultivate elegance in my everyday.

These photos by Richard Avedon epitomize elegance and glamour, and I hope that they inspire you as much as they inspire me.  Best wishes for an amazing 2010!

Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery

I wish that I could stop time for a few days and just read.  I have a stack of books on my nightstand — a biography of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay, a collection of her poetry, and an art history book about costume and fashion.  Last night I added Muriel Barbery’s The Elegance of the Hedgehogrecommended to me by several people.  There are so many more on my list…William Shawcross’s new biography of the Queen Mother, the Josephine Bonaparte trilogy, Deborah Davis’s Strapless about the John Singer Sargent painting Madame X…the list goes on and on.

I have the undesirable habit of starting new books before I finish what I’m currently reading, so my “to read” pile grows more quickly than I can keep up with.  So many books, so little time!  Perhaps the answer is to schedule a weekend retreat to stay at home and revel in reading.
